Vowel Teams: The Full List, With Words for Every Sound

A vowel team is two letters — sometimes three — that spell one vowel sound: ai in train, ee in bee, oa in boat, oo in moon. There are 19 in common use, covering most vowel sounds a child meets after three-letter words.

Long a and long e

• ai — train, rain, paint
• ay — hay, play, day
• ee — bee, feet, tree
• ea — leaf, eat, dream
• ey — key, monkey, honey

Long i and long o

• ie — pie, tie, lie
• igh — light, night, high
• oa — boat, coat, road
• oe — toe, doe, hoe
• ow — crow, snow, window

The oo sounds

• oo — moon, spoon, zoo
• oo — book, look, foot
• ue — glue, blue, true
• ew — screw, chew, new
• ui — juice, fruit, suit

The gliding sounds (diphthongs)

• oi — coin, boil, join
• oy — boy, toy, joy
• ou — cloud, out, house
• ow — cow, now, owl

The /aw/ sound

• au — astronaut, sauce, haunt
• aw — straw, saw, paw

Both often get filed with the diphthongs, but in saw and straw the mouth holds one position: /aw/ is steady, not a glide. au and aw are a 2nd grade spelling week on our second grade spelling words list.

Magic e — a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e in cake, bike, bone, cube — is a different pattern: a consonant splits the pair.

“Two vowels go walking” is wrong about half the time

The rhyme — when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking — is everywhere, and it isn’t reliable. Theodore Clymer’s 1963 analysis found it held for only about 45% of the words it covered, below the 75% bar he set for a rule worth teaching.

It works for rain, boat, bee. It fails for book, boy, cloud, boil and bread. Teach each team as its own thing — team, sound, picture.

oo has two sounds — and so do ow and ea

oo says one sound in moon, spoon, food and zoo, and a shorter one in book, look, foot, good. Nothing tells you which. The honest instruction: try the moon sound first; if it isn’t a word you know, try the book sound.

ow flexes the same way — crow, snow, slow versus cow, now, owl, down — and so does ea: leaf, eat, dream versus bread, head, ready. Treat the flip as normal, not a mistake; it’s what stops a child stalling. The mat flags all three.

The position rule that mostly holds up

Some teams live at the start or middle of a word; their partners live at the end.

• ai in train, rain → ay in hay, play, day
• oi in coin, boil → oy in boy, toy, joy
• au in sauce, haunt → aw in saw, paw, claw
• oa in boat, road → ow in crow, snow

It’s tightest for the first two. aw and ow also sit before a final n or l: lawn, crawl, down, owl.

Spelling a word? Position picks the team: /oi/ in the middle is oi, at the end oy.

How to practice, five minutes a day

Teach one sound, not one spelling. Introduce ai and ay together as two coats for one /ay/ sound, not months apart.

Go on a word hunt. Pick one team, find it in tonight’s book — five words is a session.

Say it, then write it. You say the word, they say the sound, then pick the spelling using the position rule.

Questions parents ask

When should my child start vowel teams? After consonant digraphs and easy three-letter words — usually late kindergarten into first grade.

What’s the difference between a vowel team and a diphthong? A diphthong glides — oi, oy, ou, ow — your mouth moves as you say it. All are spelled with vowel teams, so the labels overlap; teach them the same way.

Which should we do first? ai/ay, ee/ea, oa/ow and oo — they cover the most words. Save au/aw, ui, ue and oe for later; they’re rarer.
